Abstract

This paper studies the impact of the Spanish constitution of 1812 on Russian liberals in general and on the Decembrist movement specifically. It concludes that the constitution mainly exerted influence on the Decembrists by confirming their belief that liberty and constitutions were expressions of "the spirit of the time." It proved to them that liberal reforms were possible in Russia as well.

Biografia autore

Susanna Rabow-Edling, Uppsala University

Research Fellow at Uppsala University. She received her PhD from Stockholm University and has been a visiting scholar at Cornell University and at Stanford University. She is the author of Slavophile Thought and the Politics of Cultural Nationalism as well as several articles about civic and cultural forms of nationalism in Russia. She is currently writing a book about women and empire focused on governor’s wives in Russian America.
