Abstract

Spanish republicans were inspired by the Czechoslovak Republic, founded on the humanist socialism of President Masaryk. However, faced with the deterioration of European stability and Spanish political coexistence, the Czechoslovak government aligned with the Western policy of non-intervention in the Spanish war. This did not prevent arms and volunteers from flowing into Spain or the Republican cause from receiving broad social support. The lethal harassment of Czechoslovakia by Nazi Germany overlapped with the end of the Spanish Republic. In postwar Czechoslovakia, as the communists prepared the establishment of a People's Republic, a critical review of the non-intervention policy took place.
