Abstract

On his own merits, Joaquín Varela Suanzes-Carpegna is recognized as one of the founders of the History of Constitutionalism in Spain. His contributions in this respect have acquired an international projection and have been praised by the most conspicuous European and Latin American specialists. In this work we wish to underline the validity and originality of a production built on the assumptions of comparison and contextualization, openness and collaboration with other legal and extra-legal disciplines, overcoming dogmatic and temporal limits and the confessed aims of the subject. Particularly with regard to the construction of a European constitutional history that overcomes the rigid schemes of nationalisms, but without forgetting the characteristics and peculiarities of the constitutional histories themselves.
