Abstract

This article analyzes the political use of history during the early constitutional debates of the French Revolution (1789-1791). The goal is to demonstrate that historical precedents and past constitutional models played a decisive role in the major parliamentary debates that led to the approval of the first revolutionary Constitution (3 September 1791). The attention will be focused on the sessions which the Constituent Assembly devoted to the division of powers, the Civil Constitution of the Clergy, the reform of the judicial system and the right of peace and war.
