Abstract

The amparo suit is one of the most studied topics of Mexican constitutional history and Ignacio L. Vallarta, president of Mexico’s Supreme Court from 1877 to 1882, is one of the most important protagonists of this history. This article provides a new interpretation of Vallarta’s jurisprudential legacy in regards to amparo in judicial matters. Although of minor significance during the 1870s, the exponential growth of amparos in judicial matters later in the century has often been interpreted by scholars as one of the principal failures of Mexico’s constitutional suit in the twentieth century.
