The elites of “Rio de la Plata” and their concept of “despotic government” (1820-1829)

This article tries to explain that a word, such as “Despotism” has a strong influence in a historical context, above all when that word is used in an epistemological sense, which (using Michel Foucault’s categories) can be said as “classic”. Using the Foucault’s idea of “theory of the representation” as well, we can see that the object is not far away from the word used to name it. Using this model, we analyze some of the despotic expressions taken from the debates and discussions used by the elites of the Río de la Plata.
