Abstract

This article tries to explain the concept of “political party” used in the first Spanish political thought. In the XVIIIth century, Spanish thinkers considered that parties were basically English institutions, which could hardly been working in other countries. During the first half of the XIXth century, parties were synonymous of “factions”, and they were conceived as dangerous associations. But in 1855, Andrés Borrero wrote the first great book about political parties showing their importance for the governance.
